FUN FACTS ABOUT AFRICAN PENGUINS

  • African penguins live off our South African coast and the Namibian coast, and are not found anywhere else in the world.

  • Their lifespan is approximately 14 years, but they can live up to 30 years old.

  • African penguins always share parenting duties. They usually stay together but can divorce, just like humans.

  • They can dive underwater for up to 4.5 minutes to depths of more than 100 m while trying to catch small fish such as anchovies and sardines, although they mostly feed between 20 and 30 m.

  • African penguins swim around 10 km/hr and can travel 30 to 70 km during a feeding trip while feeding their chicks.

  • African penguins were called jackass penguins because of the braying sound they make.

  • Male and female African penguins look almost identical. It is only possible to tell the gender by doing a DNA test.

  • The spot pattern on an African penguin’s chest and belly is unique to each bird, like our fingerprints are unique to us. These spot patterns can be used to identify individual birds.

  • Men’s tail suits are called “penguin suits” because they look just like the black and white colouration of penguins.
