RESIDENTS NEAR
PENGUIN COLONIES

  • Keep your dogs on leashes when walking on beaches and secure them in your garden when not walking.

  • Be careful when driving – look out for penguins crossing the roads.

  • When you get back into your car after parking, look under the car to make sure a penguin is not sheltering there.

  • If you see anything of concern around penguin nesting sites, be sure to let the authorities know.

  • If you see a dead or injured penguin, report it

  • Support the rangers operating in your area by heeding to the conservation signs and by reporting human behaviour which is threatening the birds.

  • Respect the boundaries of the penguin nesting sites.

  • Take photographs and videos, but keep at least 3 meters away from the birds.

  • Share your love for penguins by sharing your photos and videos on social media using the hashtags #AfricanPenguin #NOOW

  •  Follow us on Facebook and Instagram and share our #NOOW campaign posts.

  • Learn as much as you can about African penguins so that you can share this knowledge with others, especially visitors to penguin colonies.

  • Support local communities to create sustainable livelihoods that do not rely on fishing activities that impact the penguin populations.

  • Get involved in coastal clean-ups. Litter in our oceans is a threat to penguins. If you don’t live on the coast, arrange a waterway clean-up in your area.

  • Improve water quality in areas critical to penguins by being mindful about what goes down your drains.

  • Support the effective management of Marine Protected Areas, especially those that protect penguin nest sites or feeding grounds. Support new protected areas where African penguins can breed and feed.

  • Write letters to Minister Barbara Creecy (South African Minister of Forestry and Fisheries and Environmental Affairs). Support her to make the right decisions for penguins.
